The word had been thrown about in our home
For a few months before
Like a crushed paper ball
In a classroom full of unruly schoolboys.
Often carelessly,
Though sometimes with purpose,
Sometimes without enough thought
And at other times after plenty of reflection
Sometimes disappearing for a bit before showing its face again.
When it finally landed
In the massive hands of authority
And developed more meaning,
It was suddenly real.
There was no escaping now.
The A word...
Here to stay.
Never to hide away or disappear again.
What changes now?
A lot!
A hole opened up under us,
And we all fell in.
It swallowed us whole in an instant.
The five of us wandered
alone...
separated...
lost...
afraid.
Until we found each other again.
We all lived in that new world
Where we found fear,
Uncertainty,
A new vocabulary,
too hard for the young ones to digest.
But, me - horrible mother,
Forced it down their throats as well.
Knowing no other way.
As time went on, we got more comfortable
In the new world
Things that at first,
Used to be too slippery too hold,
Too fuzzy to see,
Too hard to digest,
And too prickly to tread on,
All became home
A new home...
We're learning to love.
Only because
It loves him back!
